  9. This is version 4.02.101 of the Diamond Windows 95 Drivers disk, with
  10. InControl Tools 95 version 4.02.244.  This driver currently supports the
  11. following Diamond display adapters:
  12.  
  13.     EDGE 3D 2000 and 3000 PCI
  14.  
  15. Section 1 of these instructions apply if version 1.00 of the EDGE 3D release
  16. drivers are presently installed on your system.  If version 1.00 is not already
  17. installed, please refer to Section 2 of this README.
  18.  
  19. New EDGE 3D Applications
  20. ------------------------
  21. This release of EDGE 3D CDROM contains two new items to help you understand
  22. the EDGE technology.
  23.  
  24. The first application is the EDGE Wizard.  This application sets up the
  25. \WINDOWS\DOSSTART.BAT file to reflect the settings you select.  DOSSTART.BAT
  26. is used by Windows 95 whenever you select the Restart the computer in MS-DOS
  27. mode? option from the ShutDown dialog.  The option selected with the EDGE
  28. 3D Wizard allow you to turn ON or OFF the MSDOS joystick support as well as
  29. selecting the MSDOS MIDI port address.  In addition, this program tests your
  30. system to verify all the drivers (display, multimedia, joystick, and MPU401
  31. for a MSDOS box) are installed.  If one of these drivers is not installed
  32. then it will appear in a dialog within the EDGE Wizard.
  33.  
  34. The second new feature of this CDROM is the help file.  The file EDGE3D.HLP
  35. is placed into your Start menu in Program:InControl Tools folder.  You can
  36. select it at any time to learn more about the technology of your EDGE 3D
  37. adapter.

  43. Section 1
  44. ---------

  46. Installing the display driver:
  47. ------------------------------
  48.     1. Start Windows 95.
  49.  
  50.     2. Right-click on the Desktop and choose Properties.
  51.  
  52.     3. Choose the settings tab and click Change Display Type...
  53.  
  54.     4. Click on Change in the Adapter Type section.
  55.     
  56.     5. Click on Have Disk
  57.     
  58.     6. Type the path to the NV directory on your CDROM.
  59.             Example: C:\EDGETEMP\NV\
  60.     
  61.     7. After the files have been copied, close Display Properties. Choose
  62.        Yes to restart the computer.
  63.     
  64.     8. After Windows 95 has restarted, do the following to adjust the
  65.        display settings:
  66.        
  67.        a. Open Display Properties 
  68.           Start, Settings, Control Panel, Display
  69.        
  70.        b. Choose Settings and adjust the color palette, desktop
  71.           area and font size as you wish.
  72.        
  73.        c. Click OK. You may be asked to restart Windows 95 for
  74.           changes to take effect.
  75.  
  76. Installing the sound and joystick drivers:
  77. ------------------------------------------
  78. The sound driver provides wave table and MIDI audio under Windows 95.
  79. Due to the design of the Plug and Play subsystem of Windows 95, you
  80. must install these drivers using the following steps:
  81.  
  82.     1. Right click on the "My Computer" icon and choose Properties.
  83.     
  84.     2. Click on the Device Manager
  85.     
  86.     3. Double-click on Sound, video and game controllers.
  87.     
  88.     4. Double-click on EDGE 3D PCI Multimedia device.
  89.     
  90.     5. Under the Driver tab, click the Change Driver button.
  91.     
  92.     6. Click the Have Disk button.
  93.     
  94.     7. Type the path to the NV directory on your CDROM.
  95.             Example: C:\EDGETEMP\NV\
  96.     
  97.     8. Click OK to approve Diamond EDGE 3D PCI Multimedia Device.
  98.     
  99.     9. The drivers have been copied to the system directory
  100.     
  101.     10. Choose Yes when asked to restart the system.
  102.     
  103.     11. After Windows 95 has restarted, do the following to adjust the
  104.         joystick settings:
  105.     
  106.         a.  Open Add New Hardware from the Control Panel
  107.     
  108.         b.  Click Next.
  109.     
  110.         c.  When asked if you want Windows to search for new
  111.             hardware, select No, then click Next.
  112.     
  113.         d.  From the list of hardware, select Sound, video, and game
  114.             controllers, then click Next.
  115.     
  116.         e.  From the list of Manufacturers, select Microsoft.
  117.     
  118.         f.  From the Models, select Gameport Joystick, then click Next.
  119.     
  120.         g.  Click Next on the properties screen.
  121.     
  122.         h.  If prompted, provide the path to the Windows 95 CD-ROM.
  123.     
  124.         i.  Click Finish.  You may be asked to restart Windows 95 for
  125.             changes to take effect.  
  126.  
  127. Installing the MPU 401 driver:
  128. ------------------------------
  129. The MPU 401 driver provides MPU 401 audio in a DOS session under Windows 95.  
  130. This driver is a special part of the EDGE 3D system driver set
  131. that must be installed separately from the other drivers.
  132. The following steps outline the installation of the MPU-401 driver:
  133.  
  134.     1. Open the Control Panel
  135.     
  136.     2. Open Add New Hardware
  137.     
  138.     3. Do not have Windows 95 search for the hardware. Select No
  139.     
  140.     4. Choose "Sound, video and game controllers"
  141.     
  142.     5. Select "Have Disk..."
  143.     
  144.     6. Type the path to the NV dirctory from the downloaded archive.
  145.          
  146.             Example: C:\EDGETEMP\NV\
  147.     
  148.     7. Enter NVMPU401.INF in the File name: area
  149.     
  150.     8. Select "EDGE 3D MPU401 Driver for General Midi in DOS Shell"
  151.     
  152.     9. Restart Windows 95
  153.  
  154. Software Installation Overview
  155. ------------------------------
  156. The EDGE 3D Multimedia Accelerator provides a wide variety of support
  157. software.  We recommended that you install the software in the following
  158. sequence:
  159.  
  160.     1.  EDGE 3D Multimedia Accelerator drivers for Windows 95.
  161.     
  162.         a.  Please see the below instructions for installing the drivers.
  163.             There are two sets of instructions, one for installing if
  164.             Windows 95 is already installed, and one for installing 
  165.             at the same time as Windows 95.
  166.     
  167.     2.  Install the Diamond application software.
  168.     
  169.         a. Please see the below instructions for installing this software.

  176. Section 2
  177. ---------
  178.  
  179. The following instructions assume that you have another graphics adapter
  180. currently installed.
  181.     1.  Boot Windows 95 on the drivers for the old graphics adapter.
  182.     
  183.     2.  Perform one of the following:
  184.     
  185.         a. If running from MSDOS then type C:\EDGETEMP\SYSCHK<Enter>
  186.     
  187.         b. If running from Windows 95 run C:\EDGETEMP\SYSCHK95\SYSCHK95.
  188.     
  189.     3.  SYSCHK/SYSCHK95 will perform the following tasks:
  190.     
  191.         a. Install NVINIT.SYS into the user's CONFIG.SYS file.  This must be
  192.            the first line in the file so that the EDGE 3D multimedia accelerator
  193.            gets a PCI interrupt allocated prior to any other PCI devices being
  194.            initialized.
  195.     
  196.         b. SYSCHK/SYSCHK95 looks for the following and warns the user if any of
  197.            these conditions are present:
  198.  
  199.                 Triton PCI bridge chip set.  This PCI bridge chip conflicts
  200.                 with the standard VGA.DRV installed with Windows 95.  If this
  201.                 chip set is found then SYSCHK/SYSCHK95 updates VGA.DRV.
  202.  
  203.                 SIS 496 bridge chip set.  This chip set in combination with
  204.                 the on-board IDE functionality can cause some performance
  205.                 degradation.  SYSCHK/SYSCHK95 simply informs the user.
  206.  
  207.                 Intel Aries PCI bridge chip set.  This chip set in combination
  208.                 with the on-board IDE functionality can cause some performance
  209.                 degradation.  SYSCHK/SYSCHK95 informs the user.
  210.  
  211.                 PCI to PCI bridge chip.  If SYSCHK/SYSCHK95 finds a PCI to PCI
  212.                 bridge chip, it recommends that the EDGE 3D card be installed in
  213.                 the first PCI slot for performance reasons.
  214.  
  215.                 Compaq Presario or Prolinea computer's with a motherboard BIOS
  216.                 date of 03/01/95 or earlier.  This BIOS does not allocate an
  217.                 interrupt to the EDGE 3D card and the motherboard BIOS must be
  218.                 upgraded before running Windows 95 on these computers.  
  219.                 
  220.                 AMI BIOS with a date of 12/15/93 and Phoenix BIOS 4.02.  These
  221.                 BIOS's do not support multifunction PCI devices.  If the EDGE
  222.                 3D is installed into the machine, a blank screen results.  The
  223.                 motherboard BIOS must be upgraded before installing the EDGE 3D
  224.                 into the system.
  225.  
  226.                 Award BIOS dated January 1995 or earlier and Phoenix BIOS 1.0x.
  227.                 These BIOS's do not allocate an interrupt to the EDGE 3D board
  228.                 and the system will hang at the Windows 95 splash screen.  To
  229.                 solve this run the BIOS setup program using F1, F2, or DEL
  230.                 (whichever key is appropriate to your system) and manually
  231.                 allocate an interrupt to the EDGE 3D card.
  232.     
  233.     4.  If the results of SYSCHK/SYSCHK95 were successful then power off the
  234.         system and install the EDGE 3D board into the system as outlined by the
  235.         EDGE 3D User's Manual.
  236.     
  237.     5.  Restart the system and install the Windows 95 drivers for both video and
  238.         multimedia:
  239.     
  240.         a. Windows 95 displays a dialog box indicating:
  241.  
  242.            "New Hardware Found - PCI VGA Compatible Display Adapter."
  243.  
  244.            Choose to install drivers from a disk provided by the hardware
  245.            manufacturer.
  246.     
  247.         b. Type C:\EDGETEMP\NV.  Drivers will be copied to the SYSTEM directory.
  248.     
  249.         c. Choose No when asked to restart the system.
  250.     
  251.         d. Windows 95 displays a dialog box indicating:
  252.  
  253.            "New Hardware Found - PCI Multimedia Device."
  254.  
  255.            Choose to install drivers from a disk provided by the hardware
  256.            manufacturer.
  257.  
  258.         e. Type C:\EDGETEMP\NV.  Drivers will be copied to the SYSTEM directory.
  259.  
  260.         f. Choose Yes when asked to restart the system.  Some systems
  261.            experience a long pause after restarting.
  262.  
  263.         g. After Windows 95 has restarted, do the following to adjust the
  264.            setting:
  265.  
  266.             a.  Open Display Properties 
  267.                      Start, Settings, Control Panel, Display
  268.             b.  Choose Settings and adjust the color palette, desktop
  269.                 area and font size as you wish.
  270.             c.  Click OK. You may be asked to restart Windows 95 for
  271.                 changes to take effect.
  272.  
  273.         h.  If the joystick was specified to be installed during install, the 
  274.             following steps must be taken to enable the joystick under
  275.             Windows 95:
  276.  
  277.             a.  Open Add New Hardware.
  278.                     Start, Settings, Control Panel
  279.             b.  Click Next.
  280.  
  281.             c.  When asked if you want Windows to search for new
  282.                 hardware, select No, then click Next.
  283.  
  284.             d.  From the list of hardware, select Sound, video, and game
  285.                 controllers, then click Next.
  286.  
  287.             e.  From the list of Manufacturers, select Microsoft.
  288.  
  289.             f.  From the Models, select Gameport Joystick, then click Next.
  290.  
  291.             g.  Click Next on the properties screen.
  292.     
  293.             h.  If prompted, provide the path to the Windows 95 CD-ROM.
  294.  
  295.             i.  Click Finish.  You may be asked to restart Windows 95 for
  296.                 changes to take effect.  
  297.  
  298. EDGE 3D Multimedia Accelerator Software Application Installation
  299. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  300.     1.  From Windows 95, select Start, then select Run.
  301.  
  302.     2.  In the Run dialog box, type in the following:
  303.  
  304.              C:\EDGETEMP\INSTALL <enter>
  305.  
  306.     The following command line switches can be used with INSTALL:
  307.  
  308.         /f              This forces a Full installation (Diamond GT 
  309.                         display driver and InControl Tools 95).
  310.  
  311.         /m              This forces a Minimal installation (Diamond GT
  312.                         display driver only).
  313.  
  314.         /d"drive:\path" This installs InControl Tools 95 into drive:\path. Note
  315.                         that the quotes around the drive and path are
  316.                         required, and that either the /f or /m must be used
  317.                         in conjunction with this switch.
  318.  
  319.         /r              This forces a system reboot after installation.  Note
  320.                         that either the /f or /m switches must be used in
  321.                         conjunction with this switch.
  322.  
  323.         /nr             This prevents a system reboot after installation.
  324.                         Note that either the /f or /m switches must be
  325.                         used in conjunction with this switch.
  326.  
  327.         uninstall       This will completely uninstall the Diamond GT display
  328.                         driver and InControl Tools 95.
  329.  
  330.     3.  From the Diamond Setup dialog box, select Next.
  331.  
  332.     4.  From the Hardware Check dialog box, select Next.
  333.  
  334.     5.  A dialog box will appear containing the path where InControl Tools 95 
  335.         will be installed.  The default path is:
  336.  
  337.         C:\Program Files\Diamond
  338.  
  339.     Select Next, or change the path as necessary.
  340.  
  341.     6.  The next dialog box selects the installation type.  There are three
  342.         installation types, Minimal, Full, and Custom.  They are defined as
  343.         follows:
  344.  
  345.          Minimal:  This will install only the Diamond EDGE 3D drivers.
  346.  
  347.          Full:     This will install both the Diamond EDGE 3D drivers
  348.                    and InControl Tools 95.
  349.  
  350.          Custom:   This will allow installation of either the Diamond GT
  351.                    display driver or InControl Tools 95.  At the minimum, 
  352.                    the Diamond EDGE 3D driver must be installed during
  353.                    a first-time installation.
  354.  
  355.     7.  If Custom was selected in step 7, a dialog box will appear allowing
  356.         selection of various items.  Select the items to be installed by
  357.         clicking on them with the left mouse button.  When finished, click
  358.         Next to continue.
  359.  
  360.     8.  At the Select Files to be copied dialog box, click Next to begin the
  361.         file copy process.
  362.  
  363.     9.  Windows 95 will ask that the computer be restarted.  Click on Yes to
  364.         restart the computer.
  365.  
  366.    10.  After restarting the computer, run C:\EDGETEMP\DIRECTX\DXSETUP.EXE to
  367.         install Microsoft DirectX. You will be propted to restart the computer.
  368.  
  369.    11.  After restarting the computer, run C:\EDGETEMP\DVIDEO\SETUP.EXE to
  370.         install Microsoft DirectVideo.
  371.  
  372.    12.  To complete the installation, run C:\EDGETEMP\INDEO\SETUP to install
  373.         the Intel Indeo video enhancements.
  374.  
  375.  
  376. Selecting A User-Defined Monitor
  377. --------------------------------
  378. If your monitor is not listed in the Windows 95 monitor list, you can define
  379. your monitor's specifications using the Diamond Monitor Wizard.  To run the
  380. Wizard, follow the directions below:
  381.  
  382.     1.  Double click on the InControl Desktop Manager icon in the tray, or
  383.         from the Start menu, select Programs, then select InControl Tools 95,
  384.         the select InControl Desktop Manager.
  385.  
  386.     2.  From the Display Properties box, select the Settings tab.
  387.  
  388.     3.  Select Change Display Type.
  389.  
  390.     4.  Select Change next to the Monitor Type box.
  391.  
  392.     5.  Select Show All Devices.
  393.  
  394.     6.  Select (User defined monitor types).  User defined monitor(InControl
  395.         Tools 95) should be highlighted in the right side of the dialog box.
  396.  
  397.     7.  Click OK.
  398.  
  399.     8.  Click Wizard.  This will launch the Diamond Monitor Wizard.
  400.  
  401.  
  402. Known Limitations
  403. -----------------
  404. INDEO 3.1 and 3.2 video files show lines and garbage during video playback
  405. with DirectVideo installed when the frame buffer is in High color mode.
  406. This is a known bug but there is a very easy work around.  You can install
  407. the Intel Indeo video enhancements to fix this problem. Change to the Indeo
  408. directory on your CDROM where the EDGE 2.0 CDROM resides and then double
  409. click on the Setup.exe program.
  410.  
  411. Papyrus NASCAR for Windows 95 - If the joystick is not calibrated correctly,
  412.                 use ALT-J to bring up the joystick calibration
  413.                 function.
  414.  
  415. The EDGE 3D PCI Multimedia Device drivers, the game joystick drivers, and
  416. the EDGE 3D MPU401 driver for DOS shell must be installed separately using
  417. the Windows 95 Plug and Play subsystem.  The Diamond installation is used
  418. primarily for ICT 95 and the secondary applications provided.
  419.  
  420. The color cursor turns into a 2 color black and white cursor when running any
  421. DirectDraw games or the NVidia accelerated games like Virtua Fighter,
  422. Panzer Dragoon, or Mech Warrior 2.
  423.  
  424. The Viewports option in the Display Properties panel in the Setting subpanel
  425. has been disabled.  The current driver does not support InControl Tools 95's
  426. Viewport function. We do not plan to support Viewports on the EDGE 3D due to
  427. limitations in the underlying NV1 hardware technology.
  428.  
  429. You cannot execute the InControl Tools Wizard from the DOS command line.  Use
  430. the Start menu to run the InControl Tools Wizard.
  431.  
  432. When using the InControl Tools Wizard at a resolution of 640x480 or 800x600,
  433. the wizard occludes the Display properties panel.  You can fix this by
  434. choosing a monitor that supports 1024x768.  If your monitor cannot support
  435. 1024x768 then the panels will overlap.  You can select the Display properties
  436. panel to see the high lighted items that are discussed at anytime.

  439. UNIVIBE Support
  440. ---------------
  441. EDGE 3D is now supported by UNIVBE version 5.2 or later.  This support
  442. provides you with more games at high resolution in MSDOS, including 7th Guest
